They listen to their customers, it's why they have been around so long and why FoE is just one of their many successful games. Inno set out an apology message to everyone and the game was changed back. But the players effected change almost immediately. I've been playing for a long time and in that span I have seen them attempt many BS changes to the game, most notably was when the attempted to make maxing out an event building only possible with diamonds. Regardless of how you feel reddit may be a good place to organize a resistance to change but not the place to actually see change in the ggame. However the way they offer them, by choosing to watch them in order to get rewards is not that bad. I'm not a fan of the ads either, it's moving the game in the wrong direction.
